Philips D8718

The D-8718 Compo-Sound-Machine is a 3-piece ghettoblaster from Philips. In France it was branded Radiola. It measures 77cm wide, 17cm deep, and 30cm tall (not including the handle). It is very similar to the Philips D8734, because it uses the same speakers and has the same length and height, but it has only one tape deck instead of two. It's a nice 3-motor tape deck with Dolby, auto repeat, and TPSS music search with 6 selector buttons. A plastic gear inside the tape deck often breaks. Replacements can be found on Ebay.

The service manual says the amplifier is a Matsushita AN7166 chip. According to Matsushita, this chip provides 7.5 watts per channel when using testing conditions of 16 volts, 4 ohms, 1kHz, and 10% distortion. The Philips catalog says 10 watts per channel, but they must have been using a more liberal testing methodology. Regardless, this is not really a "hifi" model. The speakers are made of thin plastic which produces boxy sound characteristics. You could improve them by adding some Dynamat.
